Torrent Group inaugurated green hydrogen facility in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh. The facility, developed jointly by Torrent Power and Torrent Gas, has an annual production capacity of 72 tons of green hydrogen. It marks a significant milestone in India’s clean energy journey.
Blending Green Hydrogen with Natural Gas
Torrent Group stated that it will blend the green hydrogen produced with natural gas. This will be done in Torrent Gas’ City Gas Distribution (CGD) network in Gorakhpur. The company will maintain concentrations up to 2%. The company will then supply the blended gas to domestic households and CNG stations. It will also reach industries and commercial establishments through the city’s existing natural gas pipeline network. The company added, “Torrent’s green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur is the first in Uttar Pradesh and the largest blending project in the CGD sector in India.”
Expanding Energy Access in Eastern UP
Torrent Gas already holds the licence to distribute Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Gorakhpur, Sant Kabirnagar, and Kushinagar districts. It also has the licence to distribute Piped Natural Gas (PNG) in these regions. The company has set up 32 CNG stations and supplies gas to over 12,000 households and 73 industries and businesses in the region. With this project, Torrent aims to significantly expand its gas distribution infrastructure and drive greater adoption of cleaner fuels.
Supporting India’s Energy Transition
As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, green hydrogen is produced via electrolysis of water using renewable energy like solar or wind power. It has no direct carbon emissions. Blending it with natural gas reduces the carbon footprint, leverages existing gas networks, and creates early demand for hydrogen as a clean fuel.
Driving Long-Term Decarbonisation
Jinal Mehta, Director, Torrent Group, stated, “The commissioning of Torrent Power’s green hydrogen plant in Gorakhpur and its integration into Torrent Gas’ CGD infrastructure marks a milestone in our long-term vision of developing large-scale green hydrogen plants across India. Blending hydrogen with natural gas offers a scalable pathway to the country’s net-zero target, reducing emissions while building demand for green molecules.” As reported by thehindubusinessline.com, Torrent is blending hydrogen into Gorakhpur’s gas grid to advance clean energy adoption. This initiative also lays the foundation for deep decarbonisation in transport, households, and industry.
