TNB accelerates renewable energy drive under Net Zero 2050 plan | Our Planet

TENAGA Nasional Bhd (TNB) is intensifying its sustainability efforts under its Net Zero 2050 plan, spearheading renewable energy initiatives including hybrid hydro-floating solar projects, green hydrogen development, and a flexible cross-border grid to integrate clean power across the region.

Bernama cited TNB’s chief sustainability officer, Leo Pui Yong, saying the company has partnered with Petronas and Terengganu Inc for projects such as the Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar (HHFS) and Green Hydrogen Hub in Terengganu, launched in July this year as part of a broader 2.5 GW hybrid solar-hydro initiative.

“The Hybrid Hydro Floating Solar and Green Hydrogen Hub in Terengganu are key milestones in TNB’s journey towards sustainable energy,” she said at the Sustainable Action Conference (SAC).

“Other initiatives include ASEAN connectivity through the ASEAN Power Grid and empowering cross-sector electrification via electric vehicle ecosystems and customer energy solutions under the National Energy Transition Roadmap.”

TNB is also advancing cross-border interconnections under the ASEAN Power Grid, strengthening regional green electricity supply. Projects in the pipeline involve over 6,000MW of renewable energy to be transmitted through Malaysia, including the Vietnam-Malaysia-Singapore interconnection project in collaboration with Petronas, Sembcorp, and Petrovietnam.

Under its carbon management strategy, TNB targets a five per cent reduction in emission intensity starting in 2025 to help consumers lower their Scope 2 emissions, which are indirect greenhouse gas emissions from purchased electricity, steam, heat, or cooling.

Leo emphasised that a secure and future-ready energy system requires more than physical infrastructure. “Collaboration, inclusivity and accountability are what make progress real,” she said. “The energy transition must be both responsible and inclusive, involving employees, vendors, regulators, and partners.”

TNB continues to drive Malaysia’s energy transition forward by advancing partnerships, strengthening governance, and powering a sustainable future for all. – November 9, 2025
