The project to create a “Donghae and Samcheok Hydrogen Storage and Transport Cluster” in Gangwon-do is speeding up.

Gangwon Province announced on the 8th that three centers to be built in the Bukpyeong 2nd General Industrial Complex, the site of the East Sea project, will begin construction in the first half of next year after about six months of design.

The three centers are △ Industrial Promotion Center △ Safety Test Center △ System Demonstration Center and will be equipped with 37 types of research equipment related to hydrogen.

The business site will be built as an integrated space where 63 hydrogen-related companies, including two centers planned by Donghae City, can move in.

The East Sea project will be promoted first, and the Samcheok project will proceed to a subsequent stage.

The Samcheok project is to have a large-scale facility in the Hosan General Industrial Complex that can produce 30 tons of liquefied hydrogen a day. We are preparing to form a special purpose corporation (SPC) after completing economic analysis.

When all projects are completed, a ‘hydrogen economy belt’ will be built on the east coast of Gangwon-do. Previously, the government designated both business sites as the nation’s first ‘hydrogen-specialized complex’.

Currently, Gangwon-do Province is conducting interviews with a number of companies that have expressed their intention to move in, while continuing additional attraction activities through corporate briefing sessions.

In addition, the ‘Hydrogen Specialized Complex Promotion Team’, a key organization in creating an ecosystem for the hydrogen industry, is expected to be officially launched soon.

Son Chang-hwan, head of Gangwon-do’s global headquarters, said, “The hydrogen storage and transport cluster project, which will be responsible for future food in Gangwon-do, will begin designing after completing various administrative procedures,” adding, “The East Sea and Samcheok will leap to the center of the domestic hydrogen industry.”
