From production to charging with solar power\n100kW class on-site charging technology\nLow cost and high efficiency hydrogen production is possible
The first water electrolysis hydrogen charging station in Korea has been built in Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.
Gyeongnam Energy announced on the 6th that it held the completion ceremony of the “Solar-based Onsite Green Hydrogen Charging Station (S-HRS)” at the site of its headquarters in Changwon and began full-scale operation. This charging station is the first in Gyeongnam and the first case of producing and charging hydrogen using 100% solar power nationwide.
This facility was built through the ‘Environmentally Friendly Water electrolysis-based 35MPa-class S-HRS Demonstration Project’ promoted as one of the energy technology development projects of the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment. It can produce and charge an average of 10kg of hydrogen a day using electricity produced by solar power, and for the first time in Korea, AEM-type 100kW on-site charging technology has been applied.
The Anion Exchange Membrane (AEM) water electrolysis method is evaluated as a next-generation technology that combines the advantages of existing alkaline and PEM (covalent ion exchange membrane) technologies. Low-cost and high-efficiency hydrogen production is possible because it can secure high durability and efficiency while minimizing the use of precious metal catalysts.
Seven organizations, including GTC, Changwon Industrial Promotion Agency, Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, will participate in this project to jointly operate and analyze data during the demonstration period (November 2025 to June 2026) and the mandatory operation period (July 2026 to June 2031). Through this, the possibility of commercialization of renewable energy-linked hydrogen production and charging systems will be verified.
Shin Chang-dong, CEO of Gyeongnam Energy, said, “The completion of the first AEM hydro electrolytic hydrogen charging station in Korea is a symbolic achievement of Gyeongnam Energy’s technology and will. We will take the lead in realizing the hydrogen economy of Korea through innovation that combines renewable energy and hydrogen technology.”
