Tata Motors on Wednesday, 15 April, announced plans to manufacture hydrogen fuel cell and internal combustion engine (ICE) buses at its Lucknow facility, with Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran revealing the initiative during milestone celebration of the plant’s one millionth vehicle rollout.
The move marks a significant expansion of the company’s green mobility portfolio at the Uttar Pradesh manufacturing hub.
The 600-acre Lucknow facility, established in 1992, currently specialises in manufacturing low-floor, ultra low-floor, CNG and rear engine buses alongside electric buses.
The plant has delivered over 1,200 electric buses that have clocked lakhs of kilometres across India, demonstrating its capability in producing advanced clean mobility solutions.
Tata Motors has been developing hydrogen fuel cell technology for several years, with its research facilities in Pune having built hydrogen buses featuring 350-bar storage systems and 70 kW fuel cell stacks.
The company delivered 15 hydrogen fuel cell buses to Indian Oil Corporation as part of a 2021 tender to evaluate the technology’s potential for mass transport in Indian conditions.
The facility houses an engineering research centre supporting innovation and features robotic paint booths, robotic welding systems and modern assembly lines for fully built vehicles.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath attended today’s event alongside senior Tata Motors leadership, highlighting Uttar Pradesh’s growing importance as a manufacturing hub.
The hydrogen bus production initiative aligns with India’s National Green Hydrogen Mission and the country’s broader goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
