STOFF2 will test new hydrogen technology at InVesta in Alkmaar
ALKMAAR, September 3, 2026 – The German technology company STOFF2 will test a new technique for the production and storage of green hydrogen at InVesta in Alkmaar. InVesta and STOFF2 signed a lease agreement for this purpose on August 31. The demonstration is part of the European REFORMERS project, in which Alkmaar plays a central role as the first European ‘Renewable Energy Valley’ being developed within the REFORMERS project.
On sunny and windy days, sometimes more sustainable electricity is generated than can be transported or used at that moment. STOFF2 is developing a technology in which this energy is temporarily stored chemically using zinc. At a later time, the stored energy can be released again in the form of green hydrogen.

Practical test at InVesta
Within the REFORMERS project, a demonstration plant with a capacity of approximately 750 kWh of hydrogen per cycle is being installed at InVesta. In addition to the plant itself, provisions will be made for, among other things, the control system and the electrical connection. With this trial, STOFF2 aims to demonstrate that the technology can also function reliably in an industrial environment and under daily conditions on the electricity grid.

Part of European energy project
REFORMERS is developing an integrated local energy system in and around Alkmaar in which the production, storage, distribution, and use of sustainable energy are interconnected. New Energy Coalition coordinates the development of this Renewable Energy Valley and collaborates with regional and European partners in this regard.
InVesta is one of the locations within the project where new energy technology is being demonstrated. With the arrival of STOFF2, work is also underway on the site on facilities to further process and distribute the produced hydrogen.
In Alkmaar, the REFORMERS project brings together various components of the energy system necessary for a well-functioning Energy Valley. Schedule
STOFF2 is currently working on the technical preparation of the project. According to the current schedule, this phase will start in September and must be completed before the end of the year. After that, construction can begin on the InVesta site.
Potential applications of green hydrogen
In this phase, the focus is on testing the technology. At the same time, possibilities are being explored to use the produced hydrogen in the local area, for example by industrial companies or for mobility.
In the longer term, green hydrogen from these types of systems can be used in sectors where switching entirely to electricity is difficult, such as heavy transport and certain industrial processes.
