Stargate and OX2 link up for Nordics hydrogen push | Hydrogen

Stargate Hydrogen, an Estonia-based green hydrogen technologies manufacturer, and OX2, a Sweden-based developer and operator of renewable energy, have signed an agreement to link up to accelerate the deployment of large-scale renewable hydrogen production in the Nordic region.

The agreement should help to deliver a project in Åland, intended to serve as a hub for large-scale green hydrogen production in Northern Europe using Stargate’s 10MW Aurora electrolyser systems.

Marko Virkebau, CEO of Stargate Hydrogen, said: “This agreement marks a major step forward in our mission to deliver industrial-scale green hydrogen solutions to Europe. The Åland project will demonstrate both the scalability and cost competitiveness of our new system and also position Åland as a hub of the Nordic hydrogen economy.”

Stargate Hydrogen and OX2 will also coordinate their participation in the ABB-led H2 Springboard programme, which is a a hydrogen innovation initiative supported by R&D investment

The parties are expected to contribute technology, expertise, and infrastructure to co-develop modular hydrogen technologies with high export potential.

Anders Wiklund, Regional Manager of OX2 Åland, commented: “At OX2, we see renewable hydrogen as a key enabler of the energy transition. Partnering with Stargate Hydrogen allows us to connect world-class electrolyser technology with our large-scale renewable energy portfolio.”

The move is one of several by Stargate Hydrogen recently, which has developed an electrolyser stack that uses ceramic-based catalysts rather than scarce and costly precious metals.

In June it inaugurated a new factory in Estonia and in July it confirmed a partnership with the Spanish energy group Repsol. Then in September it announced plans to build a Middle East headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in a bid to strengthen the region’s hydrogen value chain through partnership.

The first of those moves, and the most tangible, is the Estonia facility, which is expected to deliver 140MW of alkaline electrolysers every year in its first phase, rising to more than 1GW a year with some small future investments. Deliveries from the new factory have already started to existing customers in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

Support for the first build has come from Estonia and from the EU, with the factory being designated an Important Project of European Interest – and therefore eligible for EU and member state funding.
