Spiral Hydrogen Raises €2.7M for Green Hydrogen Pilot in Rotterdam

A novel centrifugal electrolysis technology

The startup has developed a bubble-free centrifugal electrolyzer, an innovation that eliminates one of the main barriers to efficiency in conventional electrolyzers. According to Juri Volodin, founder and CEO of Spiral Hydrogen, current electrolyzers lose up to 30% of input energy because gas bubbles form on the electrodes, blocking reactive sites.

Spiral Hydrogen’s proprietary architecture entirely avoids this phenomenon: gases are routed directly through the porous electrode into a dedicated channel. The result is an efficiency above 90%, dramatically lowering the levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) and making green hydrogen, for the first time, cheaper than fossil-based alternatives, the company says.

Industrial demonstration in Rotterdam

The funding raised will move the technology from lab to pilot deployment. A bubble-free centrifugal electrolyzer will be built in the Port of Rotterdam, in partnership with SwitcH2, a company specializing in offshore ammonia solutions. “Our technology solves one of the industry’s most stubborn problems, gas bubbles, and unlocks efficiencies that finally allow the hydrogen economy to decarbonise profitably,” said Volodin.

The Rotterdam pilot marks a critical step toward commercial scale. To support this development, Spiral Hydrogen is actively hiring scientists and engineers through its website spiralhydrogen.com/careers.

Hydrogen infrastructure projects multiply

Meanwhile, green hydrogen initiatives continue to take shape. NaTran and Teréga recently obtained the EU Projects of Common Interest (PCI) label for their hydrogen infrastructure projects, underscoring public sector commitment. These developments strengthen the ecosystem in which Spiral Hydrogen’s technology operates.
