Tripartite MoU targets hydrogen ecosystem, green methanol and SAF; JV under study to speed infrastructure build-out.
Towngas, Sinopec (Hong Kong) and Sinopec Star Company have signed a memorandum of understanding to form a strategic partnership spanning clean energy solutions such as hydrogen, green methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The partners will jointly pursue hydrogen business development, refueling stations, liquid hydrogen storage and transport, hydrogen charging stations, green methanol for shipping and SAF development, while exploring a joint venture to pool resources and scale projects.
“This cooperation represents a partnership among three parties with complementary strengths and aligned objectives,” said Wu Qinggao, Director and General Manager of Sinopec (Hong Kong) Limited.
Hong Kong’s local supply underpins the effort. Towngas, whose manufactured gas is roughly half hydrogen, reports annual hydrogen capacity above 12,000 tonnes and recent pilots including the city’s first public automatic hydrogen charging system and an integrated hydrogen generator. Sinopec (Hong Kong) operates a leading network across fuel retail, wholesale, aviation and marine, and runs the city’s first public hydrogen refueling station.
Sinopec Star, the Chinese giant’s new‑energy arm, focuses on wind and solar power, green power transmission and green hydrogen across production, storage, transport and applications.
Aligned with China’s 15th Five‑Year Plan and Hong Kong’s green‑tech ambitions, the partners say the MoU will be a springboard to deepen practical cooperation, accelerate hydrogen adoption in transport and power, and help position Hong Kong as a regional hub for low‑carbon fuels.
