Significant hydrogen subsidies announced in Czechia

Czechia can start producing low-carbon hydrogen. Environment Minister Petr Hladík announced the launch of a new funding scheme from the Modernisation Fund to support the production and use of hydrogen produced from renewable sources. Three billion korunas (120 million euros) are available for the construction of new electrolysers.

“We see hydrogen, produced using renewable energy, as the emission-free fuel of the future. It is also one of the solutions, alongside batteries, to help address the electricity surplus from wind and solar power plants,” said Environment Minister Petr Hladík.

One billion korunas (40 million euros) are primarily intended for projects located in the Ústí nad Labem, Karlovy Vary and Moravian-Silesian regions – regions affected by the decline in coal mining.

The first pilot projects for green hydrogen production started in October 2023 in the Zlín region by SG Hydrogen Napajedla, with the support of the Modernisation Fund of 16 million korunas (640,000 euros). Another project supported with 14 million korunas (560,000 euros) for the production and use of green hydrogen in transport is also being prepared by local utility company Pražská plynárenská at its premises in Prague-Michli.

In its Hydrogen Strategy, Czechia committed to produce around 20,000 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year by 2030. This will require the construction of new electrolysers with a total capacity of 400 megawatt electrical (Mwe).
