Spanish special steel manufacturer Sidenor has conducted the first tests of burning green hydrogen in a key process of its steel production chain – ladle heating. This is stated in the company’s press release.
The tests took place at the steel plant in Basur, where the company replaced a conventional burner with a hydrogen-based oxy-fuel burner. A complete ladle heating cycle was carried out, reaching the required operating temperatures.
These tests are an important milestone, as Sidenor conducted them in thermal processes that require high temperatures and are therefore difficult to electrify, the company said. They took place as part of the IS2H4C project (Horizon Europe program).
“Sidenor is a company committed to environmental and ecological safety, so it is constantly researching and investing to find ways to promote the decarbonization of its production processes,” the statement said.
In December last year, Sidenor Group announced the acquisition of Eplus, a Barcelona-based company that recycles industrial scrap and waste. This move is part of a strategy to reduce carbon emissions and increase production sustainability.
Earlier in 2024, Sidenor completed the acquisition of Miguel Martín, located in Fuenlabrada, Madrid, to secure its scrap supply. In addition, in 2022, the steel manufacturer bought Aguilar Metal Recycling, which specializes in recycling various types of metals.
