Saudi Arabia-headquartered Alfanar Group is planning to enter India’s emerging green hydrogen market but is holding off until there’s greater clarity on policy and regulatory frameworks.

As per media reports, Mohammed Irfan, Chief of Alfanar India, pointed out that unlike the mature renewable energy sector, where long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) are secured through entities like NTPC and SECI, the green hydrogen space still lacks assured offtake agreements.

“Policy visibility and bankable offtake mechanisms will be crucial for us to enter the Indian green hydrogen space,” Irfan said.

Globally, Alfanar is developing a green hydrogen project in Egypt and a green ammonia facility in Chile. The company currently holds a 1.7 GW renewable energy portfolio spanning Spain, Egypt, and India.

In India, Alfanar operates a 506.5 MW wind power project in Gujarat, with an additional 50 MW under construction.

The company’s interest in India’s green hydrogen potential aligns with the country’s clean energy ambitions and its bid to become a global hub for green fuels.
