PowerChina starts trial operations at 20MW green hydrogen facility in Uzbekistan

Located at the Maxam chemical plant in Uzbekistan’s capital, the facility uses four alkaline electrolyser units with a combined capacity of 20MW, together producing around 3,150 tonnes of hydrogen per year.

Representing PowerChina’s first overseas green hydrogen venture, the production plant is replacing grey hydrogen currently used at the Maxam site, cutting around 30,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

“The project represents a key milestone in advancing green, low-carbon energy transformation across central Asia and beyond,” PowerChina said in a statement.

The initiative also reflects China’s growing global hydrogen ambitions. In May 2024, the Hydrogen Council reported that the country accounted for over 40% of all hydrogen projects worldwide that had reached final investment decision (FID).

By comparison, Europe accounted for 40% of all announced projects globally, but just 30% of those with FID status, reflecting slower progress on project execution.

Speaking to H2 View last May, Hydrogen Council CEO Ivana Jemelkova said the West must wake up and act on hydrogen or risk surrendering the future to China.
