Power to Hydrogen (P2H2) Lands Commercial Order from SINTEF for AEM Electrolyzer System - News and Statistics

Power to Hydrogen (P2H2), which develops anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzer systems, has secured a binding commercial order from SINTEF, a major European research institute, for a 0.5 MW AEM electrolyzer unit. Delivery is slated for the last quarter of 2026. The system will be installed at SINTEF’s site in Tiller, Norway, to generate green hydrogen for an innovative gas fermentation process. This process merges green hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide to create zero-emission acetone, a foundational chemical utilized in solvents, plastics, and industrial supply chains.

This purchase marks Power to Hydrogen’s second commercial venture, following its notable project at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges, which is expected to begin operation this summer. It signifies a notable advancement of AEM electrolysis into green chemistry and industrial carbon utilization. The installation is part of PYROCO2, a prominent EU Horizon 2020 Green Deal initiative funded by the European Union (grant agreement #101037009). PYROCO2 unites a consortium focused on proving a commercially feasible method for directly converting CO2 into acetone, addressing a critical aspect of carbon cycle management: utilizing captured CO2 to manufacture industrial chemicals.

Alexander Wentzel, Chief Scientist at SINTEF, stated that the initiative aims to demonstrate a practical and scalable approach to turning captured CO2 and renewable hydrogen into valuable products. He emphasized that achieving this requires hydrogen production technology that offers efficiency, flexibility, and a route to reduced system costs, and expressed confidence that Power to Hydrogen’s AEM platform meets these requirements.

Paul Matter, CEO of Power to Hydrogen, noted that SINTEF is one of Europe’s most exacting research organizations and chose their technology because it provides cost-effectiveness and robustness in real-world conditions. He remarked that this order reflects increasing commercial interest in industrial-scale AEM electrolysis as businesses pursue decarbonization, and that such applications will be essential for driving future demand for competitively priced green hydrogen.

Power to Hydrogen’s system will supply green hydrogen for a conversion method that combines hydrogen with captured carbon dioxide to produce acetone. The entire process is intended to run on renewable electricity, resulting in an effectively emission-free final product. The company’s AEM design supports rapid load adjustment with variable renewable power and minimal deterioration during continuous industrial cycling, aligning well with the operational demands of projects like PYROCO2.
