PM Jetten's Visit to Maasvlakte: Infrastructure, Investment, and Green Hydrogen - News and Statistics

On 12 August, Prime Minister Rob Jetten toured the Maasvlakte alongside Boudewijn Siemons, the CEO of the Port of Rotterdam Authority. The three-hour visit offered an in-depth look at the latest developments in Rotterdam’s logistics and industrial landscape.

The tour began at the APM Terminals container terminal, a key hub for the port’s core container transport operations. These containers carry food products, semi-finished goods, and finished products for both import and export, with many businesses depending on reliable supply chains. The conversation there touched on the strengths and weaknesses of Dutch infrastructure.

Next, Jetten met with industry representatives to discuss the investment climate. Many firms are eyeing investments of hundreds of millions of euros in new, sustainable production facilities, but they worry about whether such projects can yield adequate returns in the Netherlands. They also cited practical hurdles like grid congestion and permitting delays tied to nitrogen regulations.

The visit concluded at Holland Hydrogen 1, Europe’s largest green hydrogen plant, operated by Shell. This facility is a cornerstone of the energy transition, set to use renewable power from offshore wind farms to generate hydrogen once operational. The Port of Rotterdam Authority has reserved part of the Maasvlakte for such sustainable industrial ventures.
