US-based Plug Power will supply a 50MW electrolyser system to Australian explosive manufacturer Orica’s recently approved green hydrogen facility in New South Wales.
The Hunter Valley site will use Plug’s GenEco PEM electrolysers to produce 4,700 tonnes of green hydrogen per year to displace grey hydrogen used in Orica’s existing ammonia and ammonium production plant at Kooragang Island.
Targeting operation by 2029, it has already received AUD $115m ($79.2m) in state and federal capex support. Once operational, it will gain a further AUD $432m ($297.5m) in per kilogramme subsidies over 10 years from the government’s first Hydrogen Headstart programme.
It adds to the growing number of deployments from Plug, including a 5MW system for a Danish power-to-X facility, and 25MW at BP’s Spanish refinery, as it seeks to achieve profitability for the first time in 2027.
The firm recently raised close to $40m through the sale of tax credits associated with a hydrogen liquefication plant in Louisiana, US, having raised $30m selling those from its Georgia hydrogen plant in early 2025.
It narrowed its cash burn in that year, delivering a positive margin in the fourth quarter, signalling early progress while remaining under pressure.
CEO Jose Luis Crespo has outlined a focus on sales growth and securing a positive EBITDA by Q4 since his appointment earlier this year.
In April, Hy2gen Canada commissioned Plug to supply a 275MW electrolyser system for a green hydrogen-based ammonium nitrate plant in Baie-Comeau, Northern Quebec.
