US-based hydrogen solutions provider Plug Power will deliver up to 2GW of its electrolyser systems to support development of sustainable aviation fuel, eSAF, and green diesel by Australian firm Allied Biofuels at a flagship new facility in Uzbekistan.
The deal was signed in Australia during a visit to the region by Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh.
“We’re turning hydrogen commitments into real, operating projects at multi-gigawatt scale,” he said. “Signing this supply agreement in Australia highlights our deep engagement in the global hydrogen economy.”
Uzbekistan might seem an unlikely location for one of the world’s largest eSAF and green diesel projects, but several factors explain its selection.
There is strong Uzbekistan government support for decarbonisation, with the country seeking to establish itself as a hub for low-carbon fuel exports. Allied Biofuels has already secured land and water rights in the Khorezm region, with plans to draw on large-scale renewable energy – up to 4GW of new solar and wind generation – to power electrolysis.
The project’s feedstock potential is another driver. Uzbekistan has extensive agricultural residues and biomass resources that can support bio-based synthesis for fuels such as SAF and e-diesel. Combined with low-cost land and competitive energy pricing, these conditions make it attractive for investors targeting export markets.
The facility, expected to cost around $5.5bn, has government support and is designed to produce its outputs for international offtakers.
Plug Power’s 2GW of electrolyser capacity will supply green hydrogen to feed the Fischer-Tropsch process at the core of Allied Biofuels’ eSAF technology.
For Plug Power, it marks a further expansion into emerging markets and adds to a 3GW supply agreement already signed with Allied Green Ammonia in Australia.
