Indonesia has great potential to become a key player in the green hydrogen industry,
Jakarta (ANTARA) – State electricity giant subsidiary PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) has begun developing an integrated green hydrogen ecosystem to supply the low-carbon energy market across heavy industry and the sustainable aviation sector.
The initiative forms part of the PLN Group’s long-term strategy to accelerate Indonesia’s transition toward a low-carbon energy system alongside renewable energy, nuclear power, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), energy storage, and the Green Energy Super Grid.
Initially, the subsidiary of state electricity provider PT PLN (Persero) is targeting high-demand industrial sectors, including fertilizer and ammonia plants, oil refineries, petrochemical facilities, steel manufacturing, and chemical processing.
These energy-intensive industries are expected to serve as the foundation for launching green hydrogen commercialization across the country, according to PLN EPI Vice President of Biomass Strategy and Business Development Anita Puspita Sari in a statement issued on Sunday.
Beyond heavy industry, PLN EPI is also positioning itself to enter the electro-Sustainable Aviation Fuel (e-SAF) market.
Under this technology, green hydrogen is combined with captured carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce synthetic crude, which is then processed into low-carbon jet fuel through a closed-carbon-loop system.
Anita said demand for e-SAF is projected to increase steadily as global aviation regulations require lower carbon emissions.
“Indonesia has great potential to become a key player in the green hydrogen industry, supported by abundant renewable energy sources,” she said.
She added that the main challenges moving forward include accelerating ecosystem development, advancing production technology, and fostering a commercial market capable of supporting long-term sustainability.
Through this integrated framework spanning technology, supply chains, and emerging demand, PLN EPI continues to transform its primary energy business toward low-carbon operations.
