OMV receives 123 million euros for the largest green hydrogen project in Austria

The Austria Wirtschaftsservice (aws) bank guarantees up to 123 million euros in production funding for the planned green hydrogen plant in Bruck an der Leitha (Lower Austria). Previously, the European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) positively assessed the project and recommended it for funding.

The 140-megawatt (MW) plant is scheduled to start operations at the end of 2027 and will then be one of the five largest in Europe. It will produce up to 23,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually using renewable energy from wind, solar and hydropower, saving up to 150,000 tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

“By generating green hydrogen locally, this plant, with a 22-kilometre pipeline running directly to the OMV refinery in Schwechat, will make a considerable contribution to our decarbonisation,” commented Martijn van Koten, OMV Executive Vice President, Fuels and Chemicals.

In November 2025, OMV and Masdar signed an agreement to establish a joint venture (JV) that will cover the financing, construction, and operation of the plant. The JV is expected to be concluded in early 2026, subject to the completion of final documentation, shareholder approval, and regulatory clearance.
