OMV Petrom has taken a significant step in its energy transition strategy with the delivery of the first electrolyser module for its 20 MW green hydrogen plant at the Petrobrazi refinery, aimed at supporting the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO).
The project, which will include four electrolyser modules, is expected to produce approximately 3,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, enabling the refinery to advance low-emission fuel production. The remaining modules are scheduled for delivery in the coming months.
The equipment is being supplied by Neuman & Esser, while construction and integration are being carried out by Kraftanlagen Romania in collaboration with local partners. The project has secured around €21 million in non-reimbursable funding under Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR).
Commenting on the development, Radu Căprău said the milestone supports the transformation of the Petrobrazi refinery into one of the region’s largest hubs for sustainable fuel production, while contributing to Romania’s decarbonisation targets.
The green hydrogen facility forms part of OMV Petrom’s broader SAF/HVO programme, which involves total investments of approximately €750 million, including €560 million for a new SAF/HVO production unit and €190 million for two green hydrogen plants. The SAF/HVO unit is expected to have an annual production capacity of 250,000 tonnes, with operations scheduled to begin in 2028.
The two hydrogen projects, with a combined installed capacity of 55 MW, are projected to produce around 8,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, supporting the conversion of vegetable and used cooking oils into sustainable fuels. These fuels are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 65% across their lifecycle.
Green hydrogen produced at Petrobrazi will be generated through electrolysis powered by renewable energy, making it one of the cleanest forms of hydrogen and a critical enabler in the decarbonisation of the transport sector.
