KATHMANDU: In a landmark milestone for Nepal’s renewable energy sector, the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, the World Bank Nepal, and Butwal Power Company have officially commissioned a 50-kW Green Hydrogen Electrolyzer Project at the Jhimruk Hydroelectric Plant in Pyuthan District.
Developed with financial support from the UK and technical assistance from the World Bank, the innovative facility successfully filled Nepal’s very first commercial hydrogen cylinder.
This pioneering initiative serves as a vital proof of concept, demonstrating how the country can harness its surplus hydropower to produce clean, storable green hydrogen.
By redirecting excess seasonal electricity, the project aims to supply clean fuel for domestic fertilizer production, industrial operations, and heavy transport.
