Morocco Launches Joint Center of Excellence in Clean Hydrogen in Casablanca

Agadir – Morocco launched on Tuesday a Joint Center of Excellence in Clean Hydrogen at the Hassania School of Public Works (EHTP) in Casablanca.

The official inauguration ceremony was chaired by the Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka in the presence of institutional representatives, industrial actors, researchers, and national and international experts, alongside academic and technological partners.

The initiative is designed to build a national ecosystem dedicated to applied research, technological innovation, and international cooperation in green hydrogen, green technologies, and the energy transition.

The Center of Excellence was developed through a partnership between EHTP, the Chinese company Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen Energy Equipment, and its African joint venture Go For Hydrogen Africa, focusing on advancing clean hydrogen solutions.

It is equipped with a solar-powered electrolysis hydrogen production system, combined with a cogeneration unit and storage infrastructure. This setup will support applied research, the testing of innovative technologies, and the training of high-skilled talent adapted to emerging energy-sector needs.

According to the statement, Baraka noted that the project is aligned with Morocco’s strategic vision regarding energy sovereignty, decarbonization efforts, and the country’s integration into global clean technology value chains.

He also underscored Morocco’s key assets in this field, including its strong renewable energy potential, strategic geographic position, developed infrastructure, and ongoing investment in human capital, which collectively support the emergence of a competitive green hydrogen ecosystem.

“The project will support and contribute to the production, storage, and utilization of green hydrogen for electricity generation,” Baraka said

Mostafa Boulal, CEO at Go For Hydrogen Africa (GFHA) stated that this “base will serve as a center for research, innovation, and prototype manufacturing. But the main objective is for these prototypes to become industrial tools that can be implemented in the field.”

Justin Gu, General Manager at Jiangsu Guofu Hydrogen said that the equipment used in the project are from their company.

“It’s an all-in-one hydrogen generation system from renewable energy. In this case, it will be solar energy, and it can produce green hydrogen by itself,” Gu said. “We believe this project is a very good demonstration for Morocco and also for other African countries.”
