Meranti Green Steel Awards FEED Contract for Direct Reduction Plant in Duqm, Oman - News and Statistics

Meranti Green Steel (MGS), a Singapore-based company, has awarded a major Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) contract for its planned direct reduction (DR) plant in Duqm, Oman. The contract was secured by a consortium comprising Germany-based SMS Group and Midrex Technologies, which is headquartered in North Carolina, US.

SMS Group provides plant construction and mechanical engineering services for the metals industry, while Midrex Technologies is a global leader in DR technology. Together, they design, supply, and build direct reduced iron (DRI) and melt shop plants that enable a shift from traditional blast furnace steelmaking to hydrogen-based production, reducing CO2 emissions by up to 95%.

According to Meranti Green Steel, the plant will utilize Midrex Flex technology, a direct reduction platform designed to operate on a mix of natural gas and green hydrogen, with a planned transition toward higher levels of green hydrogen as supply increases. This approach supports the company’s pathway to competitive, low-carbon ironmaking from the start, with a route to further reduce emissions over time.

The work with SMS and Midrex will establish the technical foundation for the next stage of engineering and supply for the plant, marking an important step toward the group’s final investment decision.
