Lotte to supply green ammonia for 1MW South Korean power system

Lotte Fine Chemical (LFC) will supply 1,500 tonnes of green ammonia over 12 months to support Amun Energy’s 1MW ammonia power plant in Pohang, South Korea.

The joint venture (JV) between US-based ammonia cracking technology company Amogy and South Korea’s GS E&C will begin receiving the ammonia in 2027.

The deal could also see LFC supply ammonia volumes for the plant’s potential scale up, which could see it reach 10MW by 2028, and 40MW in the longer-term.

While LFC does not currently produce its own green ammonia, earlier this year it received the first batch of green ammonia from Envision’s large-scale plant Chifeng, Inner Mongolia plant.

The deal follows a September tie-up between LFC and Amogy, which outlined LFC  supplying ammonia for Amogy’s cracking and ammonia-to-power technologies across South Korea.

GS E&C invested $15m in Amogy in late 2025 before the pair launched the Amun JV in April.

Around the same time, they started work on the 40MW system alongside HD Hyundai Infracore.

This year, Amogy has undertaken a series of moves targeting Asian markets.

In January, it linked with South Korea’s Vinssen and Samsung Heavy Industries to replace diesel generators onboard large commercial vessels.

It has since partnered with Hoku Infrastructure on ammonia cracking in Asia’s digital sector, and with Kowa to evaluate using ammonia to support clean-hydrogen imports into Japan.

While ammonia is being explored as a means of absorbing otherwise-curtailed renewable electricity for power applications, its multiple conversion steps have drawn criticism over the resulting energy losses and economic efficiency.
