The Port of Klaipéda has opened Lithuania’s first green hydrogen production and refuelling station, capable of producing 127 tonnes per year (tpa) of hydrogen.
Compatible with passenger vehicles, heavy-duty transport, and ships, the station is scheduled to enter commercial service by autumn 2026.
Around a quarter of its capacity is earmarked for the port’s own operations.
The station was developed by engineering firm MT Group under Lithuania’s Economic Recovery and Resilience Plan and features a 2.25MW PEM electrolyser from UK-based IMI.
Around half of the project’s €12m ($14m) funding was covered by the EU NextGenerationEU programme – an €800bn temporary stimulus package centring economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic.
For Lithuania, the hub aligns with national targets to boost renewable energy use and promote innovative low-carbon technologies across industrial and transport sectors.
The country has set a goal of installing 1.3GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030 to enable production of up to 129,000 tonnes of green hydrogen.
In March 2025, it was granted €36m ($42m) in EU state aid funding to support its hydrogen production goals and reduce dependence on Russian fossil fuels.
Vilnius, the country’s capital, recently saw project engineer MT Group break ground on a 3MW green hydrogen refuelling project.
