Ladakh to usher in new energy era with Army-backed Green Hydrogen project
Shimla/Chandigarh:
With just five days to go for the ArmyDayParade2026, the Indian Army has showcased yet another milestone in its sustainability drive — a Green Hydrogen Microgrid Project at Chushul in Ladakh, the highest of its kind in the world.
Developed in collaboration with NTPC, the project will provide round-the-clock clean power to troops deployed in extreme high-altitude conditions. Army sources said the initiative is not just about energy security for soldiers but will also trigger a new green energy era for Ladakh’s remote villages.
> “For Ladakhis, this project will ring in a new energy era. It shows how clean technology can work even in the harshest conditions. This model can be replicated across border villages,” an Army officer said.
The microgrid will significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels and is expected to cut nearly 1,500 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Officials said it reflects the Army’s larger commitment to sustainability, resilience and self-reliance under the theme:
Beyond military use, the project is being seen as a game changer for India’s ‘First Villages’ along the borders, where access to reliable power remains a challenge.
Army sources said the success of this project opens doors for similar green hydrogen installations across other high-altitude and remote regions.
The initiative also aligns with India’s Net Zero goals and highlights the Armed Forces’ role in driving climate-resilient infrastructure in strategic areas.
