A collaborative venture known as the Kapuni Project has achieved a key financial milestone, according to a report from Hydrogen Central. The development involves Hiringa Energy, Ballance Agri-Nutrients, Todd, Parininihi ki Waitotara, and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, with Westpac NZ providing the project financing.

This initiative is described as an integrated renewable energy and green hydrogen production facility. It is noted as the first of its kind in the country to combine wind generation, industrial renewable electricity supply, and scaled green hydrogen production. The project is situated in South Taranaki and will utilize four wind turbines with a combined capacity of 25.6 megawatts. Annual electricity generation is anticipated to be roughly 100 gigawatt-hours.

A hydrogen electrolyser with a five-megawatt capacity will be installed alongside the wind farm. This unit is expected to yield as much as two tonnes of green hydrogen daily. The hydrogen output is intended for multiple applications, including the production of lower-carbon fertiliser at the adjacent Ballance plant and supplying a national green hydrogen refuelling network operated by Hiringa Energy. This refuelling network, established in 2024, is reported to have already offset over 272,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent emissions.

The project is characterized as the initial green hydrogen production for the Taranaki region and the largest such capacity in the nation. Preliminary construction work is scheduled to begin soon, focusing on initial civil works. The facility is projected to start generating renewable electricity and green hydrogen in 2027.
