As countries worldwide race to adopt cleaner energy sources, Jordan is stepping up efforts to harness its renewable energy potential. Green hydrogen, produced using renewable power, is emerging as a key pillar of the Kingdom’s strategy to transition to a sustainable, low-carbon economy.
On Wednesday, the Cabinet approved a comprehensive framework to accelerate green hydrogen development across Jordan.
According to the Jordan News Agency, Petra, the newly adopted strategy outlines a national vision to position the Kingdom as a regional hub for green hydrogen production.
Prepared by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the framework emphasizes Jordan’s natural advantages: abundant solar and wind resources, vast unused lands, and regulatory incentives that make the Kingdom an attractive destination for investment in the emerging sector.
The ministry described the move as a strategic step toward positioning Jordan as a regional center for green hydrogen production.
The framework includes a detailed plan to support investment, identifying strategic locations in southern Jordan for renewable energy projects. It also allocates an industrial zone within the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority for green hydrogen plants and water desalination facilities.
Infrastructure development in Aqaba will include desalination units, green ammonia storage, export terminals, and other critical logistics to support hydrogen production.
The government is offering incentives under existing legislation, including the Investment Environment Law and the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Law, to attract investors. A contractual process is also in place, guiding investors from signing memoranda of understanding and conducting feasibility studies to securing land and finalizing investment agreements.
A national green hydrogen committee, comprising key stakeholders, has been formed to oversee the strategy’s implementation and ensure alignment with broader goals such as enhancing food security, increasing exports, and building a green economy.
Last week, the government approved two land-use agreements with Jordan’s Philadelphia Solar and Germany’s Enertrag to begin feasibility studies.
“These are part of the government’s broader strategy to position Jordan as a regional hub for green hydrogen,” the statement said.
