Jeju ‘Green Hydrogen Ecosystem Experience’ is expected to expand Hyundai Motor’s ‘technology’ combined infrastructure, introduce hydrogen trams, and commercialize V2G
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, which has the nation’s highest renewable energy generation rate and electric vehicle penetration rate, has joined hands with Hyundai Motor Group to “K-carbon neutrality.”
Jeju Island and Hyundai Motor Group signed a business agreement at the Jeju International Convention Center (ICC Jeju) on the 25th, the second day of the “2025 Green Hydrogen Global Forum.”
The agreement is a cooperative model that combines Jeju Island’s leading experience in the green hydrogen ecosystem with Hyundai Motor Group’s hydrogen mobility technology and distributed energy capabilities.
Under the agreement, Jeju Island and Hyundai Motor Group will work together on eight tasks in the field of green hydrogen and distributed energy. Challenges in the green hydrogen sector include ▲Expanding green hydrogen production and securing economic feasibility ▲Creating a city that is good for hydrogen cars ▲Introducing a hydrogen tram ▲Building eco-friendly logistics and hydrogen infrastructure for decarbonizing ports. Challenges in the distributed energy sector include ▲ Pilot service for two-way charging (V2G) linked to government tasks ▲ Commercialization of V2G for the first time in Korea ▲ Supply of electric vehicles equipped with V2G functions ▲ Attracting policies to expand two-way charging infrastructure.
Jeju Island has already proved to be the best place for energy conversion, recording the nation’s highest renewable energy generation rate (20%) and electric vehicle penetration rate (10.12%). In particular, it started producing green hydrogen and operating hydrogen buses based on renewable energy for the first time in Korea in 2023, and has been building a hydrogen economy ecosystem since November last year by leading commercial sales of green hydrogen.
In addition, V2G technology solves the output control problem that appears in the process of expanding solar and wind power generation, and presents an innovative model that uses electric vehicle batteries as energy storage resources (ESS). Based on these achievements, Jeju Island was selected as the final candidate for the government’s distributed energy specialization area in May.
Jeju Governor Oh Young-hoon said, “Jeju has set the goal of building a global green hydrogen hub and has led Korea’s energy transition, including the first green hydrogen production in Korea and the establishment of a V2G-based distributed energy model. We hope that Jeju will develop into a leading model for energy transition not only in Korea but also worldwide through cooperation with Hyundai Motor Group.”
Yang Hee-won, president of Hyundai Motor Group, said, “We have made great efforts in hydrogen production, distribution, and utilization, but there is still a long way to go before settling down in society. Hyundai Motor Group will firmly move forward as a partner for realizing a sustainable future society that Jeju Island dreams of using Jeju as a clean research and development center.” Reporter Ko Kyung-ho of Jeju
