JeJu Energy Corporation wins at Asian Power Awards 2025 for green hydrogen project

The project integrates coastal wind technology and hydrogen production to support South Korea’s clean energy goals.

The renewable energy public corporation of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, JeJu Energy Corporation, won Green Hydrogen Power Project of the Year – GOLD in the Asian Power Awards 2025 for its HaengWon Demonstration Wind Power Plant Project. The initiative combined offshore wind technology with hydrogen production to establish a new integrated renewable energy model on Jeju Island.

The project introduced the world’s first coastal block-type foundation method for wind turbines, developed in collaboration with local industry and research partners. Unlike traditional foundations that require large-scale flood barriers and riprap, this method uses block modularisation and underwater tie-in technology to reduce material use by 20%. It also lowers riprap, cover stone material, and transport costs by 30% and increases structural safety by 30%, making turbine installation more secure in Korea’s rocky coastal environments.

To ensure efficiency, JeJu Energy Corporation also commercialised a real-time renewable energy generation data linkage system. In line with Korea Power Exchange regulations, the system transmits operational data, including output levels, wind speed, and grid status, in under one minute. This ensures grid stability and compliance, whilst reducing the risk of signal disruption and data loss.

Another key outcome of this project is the construction and operation of a 3.3 MW green hydrogen production facility, the first of its kind in Korea. Hydrogen produced at this facility has been supplied to hydrogen mobility, such as fuel cell buses, through green hydrogen charging stations, with approximately 30 tons supplied in 2024. This has contributed to carbon reduction, and supply is planned to be continuously expanded in the future.

This marked the establishment of an integrated wind-hydrogen model, supporting South Korea’s wider strategy for a hydrogen economy and carbon neutrality. With an expected annual output of 7,358 MWh, the HaengWon Demonstration Wind Power Plant represents both technological innovation and practical implementation.

The Asian Power Awards celebrates the innovative and groundbreaking projects and initiatives in the power sector. Dubbed as the “Oscars” of the power industry, the awards programme honours companies that have taken game-changing steps to meet the growing energy demand.
