Japan’s Hydrogen Push Starts to Gain Momentum


After an underwhelming start to its 3 trillion yen ($19 billion) hydrogen subsidy scheme, Tokyo has gotten the program moving in earnest by selecting power giant Jera and trading house Mitsui for supplies from their 1.4 million ton per year Blue Point blue ammonia project in the US. More awards are expected this year, with projects in the Mideast and India on the radar. Local power firms are also turning their attention to Japan’s clean power auctions as another way to get co-firing projects rolling.
