ITM Power wins 710MW German electrolyser contracts

German engineering and project development company Stablegrid Group has chosen ITM Power to supply electrolyser capacity totalling 710 megawatts for two energy infrastructure projects.

In the first project in Rüstringen, the UK electrolyser firm will supply a 30MW green hydrogen production plant based on Neptune V containerised electrolysers, and 680MW indoor electrolyser capacity is planned for the second one.

They will operate exclusively for grid balancing and stabilising the power system, using underground caverns as hydrogen storage facilities to absorb discrepancies between electricity supply and hydrogen consumption.

Final investment decision for the projects is expected in January 2026 and 2028 respectively.

Last month ITM Power unveiled a 50MW green hydrogen plant blueprint to enable more scalable and cost-effective hydrogen production.

The Alpha 50 plant – priced at €50m – can be skid-mounted, prefabricated and standardised to reduce costs and aims to produce high-purity hydrogen at 30 bar pressure.

Last year German utility Uniper launched a new site specifically designed for the storage of green hydrogen in Krummhorn, Germany.

The salt cavern has total storage capacity of nearly 500,000 normal cubic metres of green hydrogen.
