Ansaldo Green Tech has completed a 300MW AEM electrolyser stack production line at its Genoa, Italy, facility, after securing over €300m ($346m) in national funding.
The new line will manufacture the firm’s 1MW modular systems, which it said can produce around 500kg of pressurised hydrogen per day.
Funded by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and the EU’s Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI) scheme, commissioning and optimisation activities will continue over “the coming months.”
The stacks will also integrate electrodes from Spain’s Jolt Solutions, which claims its technology reduces voltage requirements for electrolyser systems.
The company secured an order for a 1MW system from Duferco Energy for deployment in its Sicilian green hydrogen valley project, as well as a supply agreement for a project northwest of Rome.
AEM electrolysers are positioned as a low-capex, highly flexible alternative to PEM and alkaline systems, without the use of precious metals or PFAS chemicals.
While degradation rates have broadly limited the technology, with the 5-to10-year lifetimes expected of alkaline and PEM previously out of reach, developers are beginning to make ground in addressing the issue.
