India pushes green hydrogen expansion with new capacity awards and pilot projects

The Government of India is stepping up efforts to position the country as a global hub for green hydrogen, with fresh capacity awards and pilot projects announced under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, Construction World reported.

Details shared in the Rajya Sabha by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy show that the mission has allocated 3,000 MW per year of electrolyser manufacturing capacity to 15 companies. The move is aimed at building domestic manufacturing capability and reducing reliance on imports.

In addition, 18 companies have been awarded a total green hydrogen production capacity of 0.862 million tonnes per year to support early-stage commercial projects across multiple locations.

The government has also moved to create demand through aggregation. The Solar Energy Corporation of India facilitated price discovery for 0.724 million tonnes per year of green ammonia to be supplied to 13 fertiliser plants.

Separate allocations include 20,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen for supply to major oil companies such as Indian Oil Corporation Limited, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited. Another 10,000 tonnes per year has been earmarked for Numaligarh Refinery Limited.

To expand usage, the ministry has approved five pilot projects in the steel sector. A separate initiative by V O Chidambaranar Port Authority will develop a bunkering and refuelling facility for green methanol.

Pilot projects have also been sanctioned for deploying 37 hydrogen-powered vehicles, supported by nine refuelling stations across 10 routes.
