New Delhi: India has commissioned 8,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen capacity as of February 2026 under its national mission.
The India green hydrogen capacity is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. The government aims to reach 5 million metric tonnes per annum by 2030.
The initiative is part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, which seeks to position the country as a global hub for hydrogen production and exports.
India green hydrogen capacity expands under mission
Officials said funding under the mission has increased steadily over the past three years. Allocations rose from ₹100 crore in 2023-24 to ₹300 crore in both 2024-25 and 2025-26.
Utilisation has also improved, reaching over ₹203 crore in the current financial year. This reflects faster implementation of projects.
Green hydrogen production costs have been discovered through competitive bidding. Supplies to Indian Oil Corporation Limited are priced at ₹397 per kg.
Meanwhile, rates for Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited stand at ₹387 per kg.
Cost factors and future outlook
Renewable energy remains the largest cost component in hydrogen production. According to the World Bank Group, it accounts for 50% to 70% of total costs.
Solar and wind energy together contribute around ₹235 per kg. This highlights the importance of expanding renewable capacity alongside hydrogen production.
The government expects the mission to support clean energy transition and reduce carbon emissions. It also aims to strengthen India’s position in the global green energy market.
