Hyundai Motor Group announced on the 11th that it will join hands with Pyeongtaek City to build Korea’s first carbon-neutral hydrogen port.

On this day, Hyundai Motor, Kia, and Hyundai Glovis signed a “MOU” with Pyeongtaek City, Pyeongtaek Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office, and Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Authority at Pyeongtaek City Hall. Ken Ramirez, vice president of Hyundai Motor Group’s energy and hydrogen business division, Pyeongtaek Mayor Chung Jang-sun, Pyeongtaek Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office Director Do Kyung-sik, and Kim Geum-kyu, acting president of Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corporation, attended the signing ceremony.

This agreement is a public-private partnership project to contribute to the establishment of a national hydrogen ecosystem by converting Pyeongtaek Port into an eco-friendly green hydrogen port. Hyundai Motor Group and Pyeongtaek City plan to turn Pyeongtaek Port into an eco-friendly green hydrogen port and lay the foundation for a green shipping route based on Pyeongtaek Port. A green shipping route refers to a route without carbon emissions in the entire process of sea transport.

Under the agreement, Hyundai Motor Group will promote technology development and business to introduce hydrogen fuel cell (FC) generators at Kia and Hyundai Glovis sites in Pyeongtaek Port. It will establish an infrastructure for hydrogen production and supply around Pyeongtaek Port and carry out various projects to convert eco-friendly ports such as hydrogen port equipment, trucks, charging stations, and ammonia bunkering.

In particular, it plans to establish a stable power supply structure based on the hydrogen production complex near Pyeongtaek Port, expand the eco-friendly hydrogen supply chain through green ammonia imports, and introduce hydrogen utilization applications such as land power units (AMP) to secure stability and economic feasibility to lead the hydrogen ecosystem.

In the process of cooperation, ▲ Hyundai Motor will be in charge of hydrogen-related projects ▲ Kia and Hyundai Glovis will introduce and operate hydrogen applications ▲ Pyeongtaek will be in charge of all matters related to the construction of a hydrogen city, including hydrogen production and plumbing infrastructure ▲ Pyeongtaek Regional Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Office will support licensing and improve enforcement regulations ▲ Gyeonggi Pyeongtaek Port Corporation will be in charge of improving various regulations.

After being selected as the first hydrogen city, Pyeongtaek City plans to build a large-scale hydrogen pipe of about 15km from the hydrogen production complex near Pyeongtaek Port to the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone (Poseung District) from 2023, and is trying to lay the groundwork for securing additional hydrogen consumers such as hydrogen port equipment.

Hyundai Motor Group, along with Pyeongtaek City, which has been leading the construction of the national hydrogen ecosystem based on optimal geographical and industrial conditions such as ports, energy import terminals, and industrial complexes, has been piloting Korea’s first hydrogen car transporter vehicle (vehicle-carrying truck) since last year in a 40km round-trip section from Hyundai Motor’s Asan plant to Pyeongtaek Port.
