Hyundai E&C Leads Government-Backed 100MW+ Green Hydrogen Plant Initiative - News and Statistics

Hyundai Engineering & Construction is taking the lead on a state-supported effort to design utility-scale green hydrogen plants capable of turning out more than 100 megawatts of zero-carbon fuel, Hydrogen Central reported. The company stated that its HMG Construction Research Institute will head the initiative, which the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment is backing.

The undertaking is meant to yield a full design package covering plant systems, core processes and operating configurations for large-scale hydrogen output, with the objective of raising the technology to a stage fit for demonstration and commercialization.

Hyundai E&C will head a consortium that includes Hyundai Engineering, Hyundai Motor, Hanwha Global, Korea Midland Power, Mirae Standards Research Institute, Seoul National University and Korea University. According to the company, it will take charge of creating the basic engineering package and carrying out an economic feasibility assessment.

Artificial intelligence and dynamic simulation models will also be applied in the project to factor in swings in renewable power generation and to boost the stability and reliability of plant operations.

Hyundai E&C said it intends to leverage the project to bolster its ability to pair large-scale hydrogen production systems with renewable energy and to react to shifts in the hydrogen market.

The HMG Construction Research Institute, the combined research and development body of Hyundai E&C and Hyundai Engineering, will unite technologies that span hydrogen production, storage, transportation and use across Hyundai Motor Group.

Hyundai E&C has in the past worked on a hydrogen production base in Buan, North Jeolla Province, and is now developing a 5-megawatt plant-type proton exchange membrane electrolysis system in Jeju.

An official at Hyundai E&C said the research findings could turn into a valuable asset for securing electrolysis projects at home and abroad and could assist in building a Korean green-hydrogen platform.
