Humber Hydrogen Network: UK's First Regional Transport and Storage System Proposed to Parliament - News and Statistics

A coalition of energy companies has presented a coordinated proposal to develop Britain’s first regional hydrogen transport and storage network in the Humber, according to a statement from the group. The source, Hydrogen Central, reported that the bid was brought to Parliament by partners National Gas, Centrica, Equinor, and SSE Thermal.

They were accompanied at the meeting by Associated British Ports, the Carbon Capture and Storage Association, GMB, Hydrogen UK, RWE, and Uniper, all of which are expected to contribute to advancing the Humber’s potential as a national hydrogen hub. Emma Hardy MP commented that the Humber is the optimal location for the country’s inaugural hydrogen network, citing job creation, investment, and expansion opportunities. She added that the initiative aims to safeguard the region’s industrial future, promote clean growth, and enhance national energy security.

The partner companies are combining their expertise in hydrogen transport, production, usage, and storage to build the first coordinated hydrogen network of its kind in Britain, located in the Humber. The network would connect projects across Yorkshire and Lincolnshire, including Aldbrough, Easington, Saltend, Immingham, and Keadby, linking hydrogen production with industrial customers and power stations.

Multiple large-scale hydrogen projects are planned in the region, such as the H2H Easington and H2H Saltend production plants, as well as Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage. Combined, the Easington and Saltend facilities could generate up to 3 gigawatts of hydrogen. The proposed network would also be strategically positioned to connect with a national hydrogen transmission system being developed by National Gas, which would carry hydrogen to industrial clusters across Britain.

As the UK’s most carbon-intensive industrial region, the Humber’s hydrogen network would support industrial decarbonisation by enabling fuel switching in energy-intensive sectors that are difficult to electrify, including heavy manufacturing, chemicals, steel, and power generation. It would also facilitate the production of high-value products such as ammonia and support the establishment of a sustainable aviation fuel industry.

To realise this potential, the group, operating under the name Humber Hydrogen, plans to submit proposals for the Humber Hydrogen Pipeline and Aldbrough Hydrogen Storage to the government’s Hydrogen Transport and Storage Business Model processes. These competitive processes will determine the location of the UK’s first integrated hydrogen network.
