Himachal CM inaugurates projects and promotes green hydrogen research

Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu inaugurated and laid foundation stones for several projects at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) in Shimla on Friday.

He opened the multi-faculty building phase III, constructed at a cost of Rs 10.09 crore. The building features three academic floors, a Computer-cum-CBT Lab, and a parking facility.

The newly established CBT Lab was also inaugurated by the Chief Minister. “It would also go a long way in expanding teaching capacity and supporting digital learning initiatives,” a statement said.

Additionally, Sukhu laid the foundation stone for a new academic block to be built at a cost of Rs 8.25 crore. The five-storey block will include parking, classrooms, and academic space to accommodate increased student intake.

During a review of various HPU schemes and projects, Sukhu stated that the state government provides Rs 150 crore annually for the university’s development. “These initiatives would strengthen the infrastructure, digital transformation and academic excellence in the University,” the statement added.

Reflecting on his connection with the institution, the Chief Minister said, “I myself was a student of Himachal Pradesh University, but there has been a significant transformation over the years.” He emphasised the need to prepare students with skills and knowledge to meet future challenges.

Sukhu highlighted the government’s promotion of clean and green energy, noting that Himachal Pradesh’s first Green Hydrogen Project is being established at Nalagarh in Solan district. He urged the university to undertake research in the green hydrogen sector given its vast potential for the state.

He noted that Himachal provides ecological services valued at nearly Rs 90,000 crore to the nation but faces an annual loss of Rs 8,000 to 10,000 crore due to the discontinuation of the Revenue Deficit Grant under the 16th Finance Commission’s recommendations. “Despite this challenge, he expressed confidence in the government’s ability to address the situation with determination,” the statement said.

While asserting and safeguarding the state’s rights, the Chief Minister stressed the importance of effectively utilising available resources “in the larger interest of the state.” He added that the government is carrying out transformative measures aimed at making Himachal self-reliant and economically sustainable.

The Computer-cum-CBT Lab will enable youth in Shimla district to take various computer tests at HPU, which are conducted by the HP Rajya Chayan Aayog. “Otherwise they have to go to other districts to appear for their computer-related examinations,” the Chief Minister said. Approximately 250 youths will be able to use this facility.
