The Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday unveiled three major policies — the Integrated Renewable Energy Policy, the Pumped Storage Project Policy, and the Green Hydrogen Policy — aimed at accelerating the State’s transition to clean energy while attracting large-scale investments and generating employment.
Under the Gujarat Integrated Renewable Energy Policy 2025, the State has set an ambitious target of establishing 100 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. The policy brings together solar, wind, hybrid, and energy storage projects under a unified framework. In addition to conventional renewable sources, the policy also encourages the development of geothermal energy, tidal and wave energy, and concentrated solar thermal power projects.
The policy places strong emphasis on energy storage, with provisions to integrate Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) into the power grid to enhance reliability and improve the commissioning timelines of renewable energy projects. Gujarat currently has a renewable energy capacity of 41.66 GW, comprising 24.79 GW of solar power, 14.64 GW of wind power, and 6.31 GW of rooftop solar installations.
The Gujarat Pumped Storage Project Policy 2025 aims to strengthen the State’s energy storage infrastructure. Under this policy, the government plans to set up 75 GWh of pumped storage capacity by 2035, which will help balance intermittent renewable energy generation and ensure grid stability.
Meanwhile, the Green Hydrogen Policy is expected to play a key role in positioning Gujarat as a major hub for green hydrogen production. The government aims to attract investments worth over ₹5 lakh crore and create nearly six lakh direct and indirect jobs in green hydrogen and renewable energy through the policy. The State plans to establish 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen production capacity, supported by 30 GW of electrolyser capacity and 75 GW of renewable energy capacity.
Currently, Gujarat’s demand for green hydrogen stands at 1.3 MTPA, driven mainly by refineries, steel, and fertiliser industries. This demand is expected to increase to 2 MTPA by 2030, further strengthening the State’s role in India’s clean energy and industrial decarbonisation efforts.
