The Government of India is actively implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM), aiming to position India as a global hub for the production, usage, and export of green hydrogen and its derivatives.

Under the Mission, several key initiatives have been launched:

  • Electrolyser & Green Hydrogen Capacity: A total of 3,000 MW per annum electrolyser manufacturing capacity and 8,62,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production capacity have been awarded.
  • Green Ammonia Supply: The Solar Energy Corporation of India (SECI) has discovered prices for the production and supply of 7,24,000 MTPA of green ammonia to 13 fertilizer units across India.
  • Hydrogen for Oil Sector: 20,000 tonnes per annum of green hydrogen production and supply capacity have been allocated to Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd.
  • Hydrogen in Steel Sector: Five pilot projects have been sanctioned to deploy hydrogen in steel manufacturing.
  • Port Hydrogen Initiatives: V. O. Chidambaranar Port Authority has awarded a project for developing bunkering and refueling facilities for green methanol.
  • Hydrogen Mobility: Five pilot projects have been approved for deploying 37 hydrogen-fuelled vehicles and 9 Hydrogen Refuelling Stations (HRS) across 10 routes nationwide.
  • Hydrogen Valley Innovation Clusters (HVICs): Four projects have been sanctioned for Jodhpur, Odisha, Pune, and Kerala hydrogen valleys.
  • R&D and Testing Facilities: 23 R&D projects and five testing facilities have been approved under the Mission.

In addition, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has advised states to integrate green hydrogen provisions into their energy and industrial policies. Several states have already taken proactive measures:

  • Dedicated Green Hydrogen Policies: Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal.
  • Facilitative Provisions under Renewable/Energy/Industrial Policies: Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and others.

The NGHM reflects India’s ongoing commitment to the clean energy transition, supporting industrial decarbonization, mobility solutions, and sustainable energy exports.
