Green Hydrogen in India: Market Opportunity and Export Outlook

Green Hydrogen in India: Market Opportunity and Export Outlook

At the 11th edition of Green Hydrogen in India conference organised by Renewable Watch, Amrit Singh Deo, Senior Managing Director, FTI Consulting & Lead, India Hydrogen Alliance Secretariat highlighted these trends and challenges shaping India’s electrolyser manufacturing ecosystem.

India has commissioned six green hydrogen projects so far, with a total eletrolyser capacity of 70 MW and an output of 10,000 TPA output.

On the pipeline side, the 13 SECI green ammonia tenders  that concluded last year are expected to add 1,485 MW of electrolyser capacity over the next 3 years, indicating steady near term growth. These tenders together translate into 637,400 tonnes of green hydrogen supply.

Around 770 MW of electrolyser with a capex of USD 1.15 billion is expected to flow into EPC, design, and equipment contracting, which will gradually transition into on-ground construction activity.

However, demand-side constraints remain significant, and without strong demand from sectors such as refineries, India can achieve only around 13% of its National Green Hydrogen Mission target.

The refinery segment, which is a key demand center, is currently seeing very slow progress and remains a small share of the overall requirement.

To address this, a SECI-style aggregated procurement for 350,000 MTPA of green hydrogen for refineries is needed, which can help push achievement to 20% of the 2030 target.

On the demand side, the domestic fertiliser sector alone could require 7.4 million TPA of green ammonia, far exceeding current tender volumes.

Additionally, export demand is also emerging strongly, with long-term offtake agreements already signed, but scaling this will require policy support, financing access, carbon mechanisms, and coordinated infrastructure development.
