Colombian senator Juan Espinal has introduced a bill to promote the production and sale of low-emission hydrogen-derived fertilizers.
“Colombia currently depends heavily on imported fertilizers to sustain its agricultural production. This dependence exposes domestic producers to the volatility of international prices, disruptions in global supply chains and exchange rate shocks,” the initiative highlights.
It adds that the price of urea, the country’s most imported fertilizer, has risen 36.9% since the Middle East conflict began in February 2026.
The bill points to Deuterium, a green fertilizer project under joint development by local firms Hevolución and OPEX.
