
A £7.3 million government funding package has been awarded to eight pioneering British companies to accelerate the development of hydrogen-powered aircraft and electric aviation, bringing the UK a step closer to a future of zero-emission flight.
The investment will support projects focused on the infrastructure needed for the next generation of cleaner aircraft. This includes electric charging systems that could one day serve flying taxi services, as well as hydrogen storage and handling facilities designed to support commercial airport operations. With the aerospace and aviation sector contributing around £20 billion to the UK economy, the funding is expected to strengthen the country’s transition towards net zero by 2050 while supporting thousands of highly skilled jobs and driving long-term economic growth.
Among the successful projects are initiatives involving Beta Technologies and Vertical Aerospace, which together have secured up to £3.2 million to demonstrate how advanced electric aircraft can be safely integrated into existing airport environments. The funding forms part of a wider £43 million government program dedicated to accelerating next-generation aviation technologies. As these innovations move closer to commercial reality, the investment aims to make cleaner air travel more accessible while ensuring airports are prepared to support both hydrogen-powered and electric aircraft.
Momentum behind the sector continues to build. At the Farnborough International Airshow, Vertical Aerospace recently showcased its six-seat electric aircraft alongside the announcement of a new UK manufacturing contract. The agreement is expected to support highly skilled employment across the South West while keeping the company on course to introduce passenger services by 2029.
Fresh research published by the University of Birmingham has added further weight to the government’s ambitions. Backed by public funding, the study concluded that flying taxis could improve regional connectivity, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to a cleaner aviation sector across the United Kingdom.
The latest investment follows the government’s £46.5 million commitment announced in May to accelerate the development of drones and flying taxis. The program is intended to support a wide range of practical applications, from medical deliveries and emergency services to commercial logistics. Amazon has already begun trialing drone deliveries in Darlington, demonstrating how these technologies are steadily moving beyond the testing phase. Ministers say they are working closely with industry to reduce emissions, encourage innovation, and ensure the United Kingdom remains a leading destination for designing, testing, and operating the aircraft of the future.
Earlier this week, leaders from airlines, airports, engineering companies, and technology firms gathered at the Farnborough International Airshow as part of the Jet Zero Taskforce Expert Group. Discussions centered on the technologies that will help reduce aviation emissions while strengthening the sector’s economic contribution. Among the government’s commitments is a £2.3 billion investment over the coming decade through the Aerospace Technology Institute Program, supporting advanced research into innovations such as artificial intelligence-powered aircraft optimization and other cutting-edge aviation technologies.
Progress is also being made in hydrogen aviation. The UK Civil Aviation Authority recently published the latest findings from its Department for Transport-funded Hydrogen Challenge, highlighting advances in proving that hydrogen can be introduced safely and effectively as a zero-emission aviation fuel.
Supported by £1.9 million in government funding, the program has brought together organizations including Rolls-Royce, EasyJet, and Exeter Airport to explore both the technical challenges and commercial opportunities associated with hydrogen-powered flight. An additional £2.5 million will be invested before March 2027 to support further research, including projects focused on hydrogen-powered ground vehicles, lower carbon airport operations, and the development of hydrogen-fuelled jet engines suitable for commercial aircraft.
The government’s wider strategy for cleaner aviation extends beyond aircraft technology alone. Last month, ministers announced a £219 million low carbon fuels fund designed to accelerate sustainable aviation fuel production across the UK. The initiative is expected to support around 15,000 jobs while contributing an estimated £5 billion to the economy by 2050, reinforcing the country’s long-term commitment to achieving net zero aviation.
