Germany's Hydrogen Refueling Network for Heavy Trucks Gets 526 Applications by June 2026 - News and Statistics

The Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) has released a positive interim assessment of its funding call launched in January 2026 to establish an initial hydrogen refueling network for heavy-duty vehicles in Germany. According to the report, the project management agency received 526 applications by the June 30, 2026 deadline, with total funding requests amounting to EUR455 million. Among these, 71 applications were for refueling stations and 455 were for vehicles or vehicle fleets. The BMV has allocated EUR220 million for the program.

Federal Minister of Transport Patrick Schnieder commented that the strong response indicates the initiative is well-timed, as the industry is focusing on hydrogen mobility for heavy trucks alongside electromobility. He stated that combining support for both refueling stations and vehicles provides the necessary impetus to resolve the chicken-and-egg problem, laying the groundwork for a rapid expansion of a climate-friendly hydrogen truck fleet. Schnieder added that this strengthens innovation, planning certainty, and value creation in Germany.

The funding is seen as a significant boost for the industry despite a continuing challenging market environment. The broad participation, including leading heavy-duty vehicle manufacturers, highlights the project’s industrial policy importance. The National Hydrogen Council (NWR), in its information and policy paper on hydrogen demand dated June 18, 2026, emphasized the funding call’s relevance, describing it as a potential game-changer for market ramp-up and as the foundation for building a basic network of hydrogen refueling stations by around 2030. The NWR indicated that based on this, a hydrogen truck fleet of several thousand vehicles could be possible by 2030.

Project selection will occur through a competitive process based on predefined criteria. Prioritized applications are expected to receive approval in the second half of 2026.
