Germany – New funding programs for the development of green hydrogen
New funding programs for the development of green hydrogen
The Energy Ministry of Saxony-Anhalt continues to believe in the future of green hydrogen. Because projects are stalling, funding programs are intended to help.

Magdeburg (dpa/sa) – To support the ramp-up of green hydrogen, new projects will receive funding totaling around 87 million euros. Companies in the structurally changing region affected by the coal phase-out can submit funding applications until August, the Ministry of Energy in Magdeburg announced. The focus will be on investments in the production, storage, distribution, and use of climate-friendly hydrogen. The goal is to use EU funds to make the Central German mining region future-proof as an industrial location.
Projects have stalled
Environment and Energy Minister Armin Willingmann (SPD), said:
The development of the green hydrogen economy is currently stalling throughout Germany, including in Saxony-Anhalt,
“Primarily due to a lack of economic viability, companies are putting projects on hold or canceling them altogether.”
At the beginning of the year, it became known that several hydrogen projects in Saxony-Anhalt had stalled. Among other things, the energy company Mibrag had postponed the construction of a large electrolyzer at its Profen site.
During electrolysis, water is split into its components, hydrogen and oxygen. The process is highly energy-intensive. Hydrogen is referred to as green when the electricity used for electrolysis comes from wind or solar power. When natural gas is used, it is referred to as gray hydrogen.
