Gangwon Province Wins 29 Billion Won State Funding for Liquid Hydrogen Storage and Transfer Project - News and Statistics

Gangwon Province has secured 29 billion won in state funding after being selected for a technology development project focused on liquid hydrogen storage and transfer systems, as announced on the 27th. The initiative, organized by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, is set to begin design and research work in July of this year.

Consortium and project scope

A consortium of 14 companies and institutions, including GS Engineering & Construction, HD Hyundai Engineering & Construction, Korea Gas Corporation, and the Advanced Technology Research Institute, will carry out the project. Work will take place at the hydrogen specialized industrial complex in Geundeok-myeon, Samcheok-si, over a four-year period running from this year through 2029.

The core objective is to localize and demonstrate a 200 cubic meter storage tank, which is the central facility for a liquid hydrogen acquisition base, along with a 2-inch loading arm used for unloading liquid hydrogen. The tank is capable of holding approximately 14 tons of liquid hydrogen. The developed equipment and technologies are intended for application in future large-scale demonstration projects.

Phased expansion plans

Gangwon Province views this technology development as the first stage of a broader effort to establish a liquid hydrogen acquisition base. Following this research phase, a second stage involving large-scale demonstrations will be pursued, with the ultimate goal of building a commercial liquid hydrogen acquisition base.

The second phase, in which Samcheok City was selected as a demonstration area in February, involves constructing and demonstrating a liquid hydrogen terminal featuring a 4,000 cubic meter storage tank and a 5-ton hydrogen liquefaction plant. This phase is backed by 266.8 billion won in state funds.

Sohn Chang-hwan, head of Gangwon Province’s global headquarters, said the first phase goes beyond merely selecting a research project and represents an initial step toward building a liquid hydrogen acquisition base in Korea. He added that the province aims to develop Samcheok into a world-class hydrogen-specialized city through proactive support and response.
