European Energy and Twig Energy Optimise Wind, Battery, and Hydrogen at Made Hybrid Park - News and Statistics

European Energy has finalized a balancing and optimization pact with Twig Energy for the Made hybrid park situated near Esbjerg in western Denmark.

The arrangement covers the coordinated management of 16 MW of wind generation, a 5 MW / 20 MWh battery storage system, and 8.1 MW of electrolyzer capacity. This configuration integrates two wind turbines, two electrolyzers producing green hydrogen, and the battery unit under a single balancing agreement.

The Made facility represents European Energy’s first instance of a balancing structure where electricity production, storage, and flexible consumption are jointly optimized within one balancing responsible party (BRP) contract. Twig Energy will oversee balancing duties and facilitate the optimization of power flows among the wind turbines, battery system, and electrolyzer. The system enables on-site electricity to be stored, directed to hydrogen production, or fed into the grid based on market dynamics and operational requirements.

Gregor McDonald, Vice President and Head of Energy Trading & PPA at European Energy, stated that the deal underscores the rising intricacy and adaptability of renewable energy systems. He remarked that merging hydrogen production, battery storage, and renewable generation into a single operational framework creates a system capable of reacting flexibly to market signals and grid conditions.

Liyang Han, Senior Energy Markets Expert at Twig, noted that the Made site is not a conventional wind or solar installation but an industrial facility where hydrogen is the primary output, supplemented by on-site wind turbines and a large battery sharing one grid connection. He observed that although the setup involves numerous components and limitations, it also opens up fresh avenues for optimization and grid assistance, and that building an automated system to manage real-time complexities is essential for achieving optimal results while satisfying all requirements and constraints.

The electrolyzer at Made will utilize renewable electricity to generate green hydrogen for industrial uses and aid in incorporating variable renewable energy into Denmark’s power system. This initiative is part of European Energy’s broader efforts in Power-to-X and integrated renewable energy solutions both in Denmark and globally. The site is already functioning, with all three elements installed, and will undergo optimization in the months ahead.
