Ireland-headquartered e-fuels developer ETFuels (ETF) has selected the Humber’s Port of Immingham for its 35,000-tonne UK green hydrogen-based sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) project.
The methanol-to-jet facility will be sited on Kings Road and will use green methanol produced at its planned facility in Texas as a feedstock.
Expected online by 2040, ETFuels claims it could support 50,000 jobs in the region.
The company’s project in Texas is designed to produce up to 120,000 tonnes of e-methanol per year, using 210M of John Cockerill electrolysers and e-methanol technology and synthesis catalysts from Johnson Matthey.
The US site could reach final investment decision before the end of 2026.
In February, the company also secured €118.6m ($139.8m) in Finnish tax credits to develop an e-methanol project in Lapland.
Project Kings Road could capitalise on the emerging clean hydrogen infrastructure in the Humber region.
A quartet of energy companies aims to secure around £500m ($672m) in funding from the UK government’s Hydrogen Transport and Storage Business Model process to develop a hydrogen network connecting sites in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.
In a statement, ETF called the region’s industrial logistics and fuel handling infrastructure “unrivalled.”
It comes as the UK and EU gear up to comply with mandates for e-SAF in aviation.
From 2028, a 0.2% mandate for green hydrogen-based e-SAFs will come into force in the UK, scaling up to 3.5% by 2040. ReFuelEU Aviation regulations go further, mandating a 10% share of e-SAF by 2040.
