China’s Envision Energy will carry out design studies for green hydrogen production at chemicals and energy firm Sasol’s manufacturing facility in Sasolburg, South Africa, to support future e-fuel generation.
According to Sasol, the planned system could advance routes to lower-carbon fuels and chemicals, paving the way for e-methanol and hydrogen-based sustainable aviation fuel (e-SAF) production. Its capacity has not been disclosed.
Envision’s studies will assess integrating renewable energy generation and storage with electrolyser technologies.
Depending on the outcome, Sasol said the green hydrogen produced could be used to produce e-methanol and sustainable aviation fuel at the site.
Sasol is a co-owner, with Denmark’s Topsoe, of an end-to-end gas-to-liquid (G2L) single point licensing solution enabling the conversion of renewable feedstocks into e-fuels.
Deployed globally in e-fuel production, it was recently selected for Allied Biofuels’ planned $6.1bn green hydrogen-based e-fuels project in Uzbekistan, and for Sustaero’s project in Canada targeting launch in 2030.
The chemical and energy company said it is actively exploring market and energy transition opportunities involving its technology and experience.
Envision currently operates one of the world’s largest green ammonia facilities, an Inner Mongolia, China, facility with 500MW of integrated hydrogen production.
With a planned ammonia capacity of 1.5 million tonnes by 2028, it is set to upgrade electrolyser capacity to over 2.5GW.
